Everything in its Place? - Housework/Funwork 1

My favourite saying is

"A Place for Everything and Everything in its Place"

      See a previous Post
             "A Place for Everything"

So I really should start seriously and do something about it
             -    putting everything into its place that is.

But before I can do that I do have to go back to the saying and work on the first part first because I cannot put everything into its place until there is first a place for everything.

Tall order you might say, and I wholeheartedly agree but I really want to tackle this in our house.  I know that one of the things that will be associated with this task is the dreaded declutter and storage sort out but it can be done.

            I need to ACT.

So where do I start?

Well I usually start everything with a list so that is what I decided was needed - a list of all the rooms in our house and the storage areas etc. in these rooms.  In other words I needed to start an inventory of our house.
This would mean that eventually everything we have would be listed in a specific place in the house.

I have had to do inventories before but mainly for insurance purposes as we moved house and then it was an inventory of some specific things and their value but most things were in groups so not as detailed as I intend this to be.

So because I love my iPad and think there should be an app for everything I hunted for an inventory app.  Not easy to find one that suited my needs exactly but I settled on
                   AB FindIt    by   Paul Collister.

Most apps for inventories are for businesses or are limited to how many storage areas within areas within areas you can have and I wanted to be able to put something inside a box which might be on a shelf or a drawer inside a piece of furniture and of course I wanted to be able to denote the room that was in too.

With this app I can have area within area within area within area and so on.

Ok so this gives me somewhere to make a note of everything and where everything is located once I have put the things in their places.  I have all the rooms in our house listed in the app and all the furniture in each room and all the shelves or drawers etc. within those also listed.  I also have gone round quite a few rooms already and listed the items within those drawers, shelves, cupboards but I am still a long way from having a place for everything and everything in its correct place.

Next Step?

To identify all the things that should have a place but still don't?
            -    Difficult for us as we have a lot of stuff.

Then Declutter? -  get rid of all the stuff that doesn't need a place.

But I have been doing that on and off since we moved into this house
3 years ago!

Obviously I need to be ruthless and determined and not give up.

Why not check back in with me on Fridays to see how I'm doing with the organising, decluttering & housework to try to keep it more fun-work than drudge-work,

and encourage me to keep at it all.

Have you managed to do an inventory of  your home?

If so what advice do you have from your experience?

Each Friday I will be doing a "Housework/Funwork" spot so why not drop in regularly and we can encourage each other.

    1. Hi Jessica, nice to meet you. I've just been over to your blog and left a comment. I have to say though that may kids have not turned out to be the most tidy but they do appreciate all they have. Drop by again on Friday and see how I manage to get on with my change from Housework to Funwork

  3. I'm constantly looking for items to purge in my home. Simplify, simplify, simplify! I do think you're on to something with the first part of that statement - a place for everything. I've discovered piles of clutter develop precisely because there's no designated place for it. I've already downloaded the app! I've very organized but am often thinking "I know I would've put that in a place that made sense, now where could that be...."!

  6. I just did a de-clutter of our house this past year. It feels so good to have that part complete. Plus less to dust. Always a plus in my house. With four girls it's a bit of a trick to keep the clutter at bay but with some work it makes living life a lot easier. Way to go!

I think I am still stuck on id'g everything that need a place...right now all those things go in the closet. Not giving up either!

    1. Indeed do not give up Margaret, I have tried different times but this time I'm committed to keep going even though I know there will be down times of feeling like you have described but making it as easy ans as simple as possible will make it more funwork than housework. Come back & check out the Friday posts and keep me encouraged and maybe I can keep you encouraged too.

  8. Great post! I love that you found an app to work for you as you continue on this decluttering journey. I've found it helpful that once I get ONE room the way I want it to look to use the "one in, one out" philosophy to keep my vision alive in that room. Keep up the dedicated action steps - you can do this!

    1. Hi again Lisa, yes I have heard of the "one in one out" idea and would love to think I could get to that stage but if I got everything organised I now I would probably feel like I could still squeeze that next thing in without getting rid of another so I would fail at that.

  9. I would love to declutter but my husband goes into a cold sweat every time I mention anything about having a clear out. Lol! Great post though and it has inspired me once more to try to get more organised.
Thanks for sharing at Essential Fridays.

    1. Hi Mel, my husband always says oh no if you are going to organise this then there's going to be even more mess for a few days, while I pull out everything to sort and put away again.

  10. Sandra, this is brilliant. I am embarrassed to say that it has never even occurred to me to make an inventory of my home, much less how to track one. It makes SO much sense, though- how often do I spend tons of time (very often, unfortunately!) looking for items that I could find with the click of an app? This was eye-opening for me! Thank you for sharing this and your post on "I Love Planning" with Treasure Box Tuesday! ♥

  11. I admire your gumption! I was not near as organized but I did do a lot of purging right after I retired and because I was not that organized in doing it I spend a lot of time now looking for stuff! Thanks for sharing on the Four Seasons Blog Hop.

    1. Hi Terri, so many times in the week I hunt for something so if I could just have a place for it and know where that was my life would be so much simpler.

  12. Simplify is my 2104 word and I'm planning a top to bottom declutter of our home and garages. I've started in our storage room so I know what is in there and more importantly how much space I have to work with. If something is coming in - something has to go!

I'll be checking out this app.

  14. So if something doesn't have a place it is clutter?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Oh gosh no not at the moment but I hope to aim for that because I hope to have a place for everything I really want or need to keep but of course that will mean making places. Then anything without a place will be clutter. I have a big task ahead I know.

  19. I do like lists, and a good de-clutter! I periodically do this in various rooms, and when the bug bites me, there is no stopping me! I can be quite ruthless with it, as I'm not really a hoarder, so if it's in my way, it goes! Thanks for sharing with #TheThemeGame (be fab if you could grab the badge, too :))

I have all the blog buttons on a blog hop page and at the moment I'm trying to find out how to adjust the coding in my template so that I can have a reference to that page at the end of each post, slowing learning about the coding!

  21. I want to declutter, but I am really bad at making it happen. While definitely not a hoarder, I do get attached to the little knick knacks that have memories related to them, and it's so hard for me to put them away. I do a little better giving them away to someone I love. It's like I think they need a good home, yet they are only things! My hubby gets a bit frustrated with me at times, but I am getting better and still working on this.

My mother-in-law always said "A place for everything, and everything in its place." It was one of her favorite sayings, and she lived by it. She trained my husband well.

    =)
