The "Man Drawer" - Housework / Funwork 8

Only one drawer remains to be cleaned,                                                                       sorted and inventoried in the Kitchen.

This drawer is the "Man Drawer"

Why is this drawer not done yet?
Because it is the responsibility of the man of the house and he is procrastinating.

What is the "Man Drawer"
This is the drawer that practically every house has.
The drawer that contains all the things a man needs to have on hand even if they will never be used again.
The one about which the wife will say

"What are you keeping those things for?"

Now I did not make this term up myself.
It is the brain child of a very well known British Comedian called Michael McIntyre and if you have not seen this take a little break now and watch the short sketch below.

                        Okay I decided it was
while I watched the video yet again.

Now that you know what is contained in the man drawer .....
batteries (are these new or used? is a question frequently heard)
keys (what is this one for?)
     old phones
4 tape measures (yes 4, but why more than one is required in one place I don't understand)
foreign currency (in our case that could be many different currencies as Fred has travelled extensively with his work)
     etc. etc.

.....You can understand why it needs to be sorted and more frequently than once a year but the men are very reluctant to allow us to speak of the drawer let alone touch anything in the drawer.
Fred, who is quite a laid back and contented man will get rather vocal when I mention this drawer.

(If you did not watch the video above, you really should go back now and do so, it is so funny)

All of the other drawers are ticked off the list.

Last week I was left with the contents of one of the drawers all over my kitchen table to be sorted and placed back in the clean drawer and this has now been done and it is so tidy and easy to find all the items now.  The larger and less often used items are in the bottom drawer of this unit all easy to get when needed.

Second Drawer After

The other drawer which took me more time to work at is the odds and ends, stationary type drawer that is just beside the little corner where we have the letter rack and the stand for my ipad and the notepad.
You know the

"this is where we throw all our receipts, business cards, post and whatever is in our hands when we come in from the car" area, mentioned in "Is it Fun Yet? - Housework/Funwork 3"

This drawer looked like this

Now some of my drawers are very small drawers which sit under narrow cupboards so they were not too time consuming.

One of these had very little in it, just basically the key to the electric box a torch and Electricity leaflet so I moved the instruction leaflets and take-out leaflets from the other drawer into this one and it still is not too cluttered up.

Then after getting a long narrow portioned tray and two other plastic containers I sorted out my drawer so that it now looks like this

Maybe we should call this one the Wife Drawer or the Woman Drawer!
It does have things in it that Fred would probably ask me

"What are you keep those things for?"

Some of the cupboards are finished and a few still to go so the Kitchen Overhaul and Inventory is going reasonably well but looks like a busy week for the last week of the month.

I have also gone through the rest of the months and here is the complete

Yearly Housework & Organising Schedule

No doubt in the coming weeks & months there will be things that I suddenly remember should have been included here and are not in my Monthly/Weekly/Daily Schedule either so I will have to add those in later and perhaps I may also decide to change some things from one month to another.

Do you think I can get Fred to tackle that "MAN Drawer"?

Don't forget you can catch up with the rest of the series via the tab at the top of the blog or signup to receive the notification of each post via email.

  1. Very important note
The "Man Drawer" is now sorted.
It's amazing what a blog post can do for you.

  2. I have drawers in every room that need this kind of attention. Your efforts are inspiring me to tackle them! I love that you have a schedule...that IS organization! Thanks so much for sharing. Blessings, D@TheShadyPorch

    1. Hi D, if I don't treat it like this it won't be done thanks for dropping in.

  3. Thank you for making my day. I laughed so hard because it is too real. Thank you so much for sharing it on Four Seasons Blog Hop. Pinning Now.

    1. Hi again Shawna, we might as well have a laugh as well as get the housework done, and a coffee too of course

  4. can you come over here and help my hubby organize his garage! LOL Great post, happy blog block party weekend

    1. Hi Karen just hopped over to see your blog and left a comment about favourite food. Thanks for taking the time to write here but I'm afraid I'm too busy with my man to do your garage, maybe you could write a post about the garage and he would then organize it. The Man Drawer in our kitchen got done rather swiftly.

  5. I love Michael McIntyre - as soon as the man drawer is sorted it's a mess again lol

    1. Hi there, he is great. I took my husband to see him when he came on tour to Northern Ireland.

  6. Wow I wonder if I could ever be this organized! This looks wonderful! You're right though. There is always a man drawer. I'm thinking of ours in the kitchen right now lol. Thanks for sharing this with us at Countdown in Style! Don't forget to stop by Friday to see if you are featured :)

    1. Hi Brittnei thanks for dropping in. thanks for the encouragement.

  7. I want to work on my organization but at this time I have place to put things! Lol! We just moved. The man drawer sounds more like my drawer. My husband's drawer consists of paper and envelopes that need to go in the trash. Why is he keeping envelopes mail came in? Thanks for sharing with Countdown in Style. I'll have to take some time tomorrow and get some cleaning done.

    1. April I know that feeling my husband is just the same, why do they not through out the envelopes when they open the mail- thats the natural thing to do

  8. i could do with organising mine far better x

    1. Hi Jaime, just set a goal even if it's very small and do it and you'll be encouraged for the next bit.

  9. And I am laughing so heard..... We have a man draw. I mention it, and guess what, this is what inevitably comes back. You have 25 draws, I get one!!! Leave it alone!!! :) Stopping by from Turn it up Tuesday.

  10. I should hire you! Amazing love your lists! Thanks for sharing on Whatever Wednesday at Thank You Honey! Have a fabulous weekend! Hope to see you next week!

  11. Great post for M ~ I have one those drawers and just organized mine as it was driving me crazy ~ Great job you did organizing ~

artmusedog and carol (A Creative Harbor)

  12. Your organizational skills are amazing. I thought my Mom was the most organized person I knew, but I think you could beat her. I loved his comedy bit about the man drawer!

    1. Thank you, we love that comedian and I bought tickets for Fred and I to go to a live show of his - you can imagine how sore I was laughing.

  13. HA! This is great. Yes, every house has a "man" drawer. Since I live alone, I'll have to call mine the "woman" drawer. What a fun post!

  14. I don't know. My experience with such things is that it won't get done unless I throw a fit and I'm too old to throw fits anymore!

  15. Wowza! Your organization list. Wow! The Husband has several drawers. I don't say anything about them because I have my own. He rarely gets inspired to organize his drawers when he sees me doing mine.

    Take 25 to Hollister

  16. I'm in need of this badly! Yikes!

  17. Enjoyed your blog....I sometimes get that organizational urge....but then I let it pass! It's my husband who cannot stand cobwebs and clutter so we stay pretty much on top of things♪

  18. I've been doing this, too!

Isn't it marvelous when things get tidied?

    I love it, too!

Thanks for linking for the letter M.

  19. I laughed out loud reading about the tape measures! My husband has about 4 sizes of tape measures usually somewhere in the kitchen - I keep asking why we need all those different sizes and he insists that each one is for a different type of job!
