Is This my Dining Room? - Housework/Funwork 46

Yes that is exactly the question I asked myself at one stage last month.

With one area after another getting painted in the house things had to be cleared out of rooms and into other rooms and of course these things did not return immediately to their proper places because some rooms took a few days to have everything completed (especially when damp is found and has to be dealt with) and then decisions had to be made.

You see I am not a minimalist type of person but I also do not like to be too cluttered or have too much furniture in any place and having come here from renting a house in Belgium plus having our own home rented out in Northern Ireland then more than one house of furniture was fitted into this house.

Even though we gave away to friends, donated to charity shops and threw out lots before we moved we still had too much.

Now while the decorating was being done was the time to do something about it.

Yes this is what the dining room had ended up like while the painters were in.

Thank goodness I wasn't tackling the Games Room last year after all
because it was worse than this.

When we had to move things out of so many rooms (6 rooms plus the hall and stairs were getting painted) we made the decision to only move back into each room the things we really wanted in that room.

Would we be successful or would we give up?

Then to make things worse ....

Fred & I stood in the hall deciding not to put back the display unit that had been there for the last 4 years and enjoy the wider hall instead but we just didn't know where all the "stuff" as we called it, was going to go instead.

"Minimalistic is the word"   I said

and he just laughed; so did the painters because as they explained, their wives could never be minimalistic either.

Well some things are important to me so I will not want to part with them but other things we will just have to let go of and then maybe I will achieve my long desire of

Just a couple of weeks before this I had joined a facebook Group organised by a blogging friend called 365 in 365 and this was going to be a big help.

365 in 365 stands for decluttering 365 items in 365 days

With this group I would have a whole year to get 365 things out of my house.

Realistically if I want to get my rooms back in order as per my plan (and before Christmas) without leaving any other places bunged full with the surplus, then I would need to do at least

365 items in 20 days

and that was just not possible just before Christmas

so I had to make the decision to restart this in the New Year.

So into the Dining Room I went and started with lifting out all the things that I knew would definitely be staying in the house but not in this room and they went into another room we had also moved things to.

Then I put away the things that would stay in the dining room and did the inventory.

Then I decided what would go to the car boot sale and moved it out into a large bag for that.

Then I still had things which I had decided would have to go so they would be listed on Gumtree (like Craigs List?)

This left me with just a few things to still be decided about and the things on the table that I hope people will want to buy on Gumtree.

So I listed the items and waited.

Within an hour I had my first reply someone wanted my Villeroy and Boch set of soup bowls and saucers - I knew I had put them up at too low a price.

Gradually the things on the table got sold.  Well not all of them yet but those that aren't sold yet are in a box up in the games room and hopefully will go soon but at least they are out of the Dining Room and it was able to be dusted and hoovered once again, and of course now we can use it for its proper purpose too.

But of course I still have to tackle all the stuff from that hall unit.

So all the awards and things that Fred had got from work went into his office and that was almost everything that had been on the bottom shelf.

One shelf load down and 4 more to go!

But  how am I doing with my

Why not check back next Friday to see!

Housework or Funwork this week?

I think the Funwork won out again because I have my Dining Room reclaimed without too much hard labour and I got paid for some of the things I got rid of.

  4. Congratulations on getting back your dining room! It is so much work, but it is always worth it when you organize a room, isn't it. I have a room that desperately needs my attention, and every couple days I say that I am going to clean it up, and every time it gets postponed. You have inspired me to get it done. Your dining room is beautiful and I love your furniture! I would love if you would share this at my blog party, Celebrate It! It is all about sharing how we celebrate the big and small moments of life. http://thefreshmancook.blogspot.com/2015/01/celebrate-it-blog-party.html

  13. I am so impressed with all of your hard work. It can really pile up quickly and I know how difficult it can be to live only with what you love and let the rest be loved by someone else. I too am trying to live the same way. Great job! Thanks so much for linking up to the Something to Talk About Link Party, hope to see you back next week! CoCo

  14. Your dining room looks beautiful! Sadly, my dining room has looked like your before picture without the excuse of painting. It sometimes gets used as a craft room, shipment storage,... Now that I'm cooking at home more it's looking much better :). I love the idea of 365 in 365. I have so much to declutter. I'm a bit of a hoarder.

  17. There is a local FB page that I need to sell some items on, I have heard it is better and a little after than Craigs List. You made a LOT of progress, that dining room was FULL of stuff before you worked through it. I think I have heard of this 365 challenge, but enjoy reading about others progress rather then trying to do it on my own...lol ;)

  18. That is a very pretty dining room! We are doing a kitchen remodel right now, taking out a couple of walls and re-doing everything. Needless to say, I've discovered that I definitely have too much STUFF. Also will be getting rid of lots of it. Well done!
